  1. British prince, known as the Young Pretender
  2. or Bonnie Prince Charlie, grandson of James
  3. II. In the Jacobite rebellion 1745 Charles
  4. won the support of the Scottish Highlanders;
  5. his army invaded England but was beaten back
  6. by the Duke of Cumberland and routed at
  7. Culloden 1746. Charles went into exile. He
  8. was born in Rome, the son of James, the Old
  9. Pretender, and created Prince of Wales at
  10. birth. In July 1745 he sailed for Scotland,
  11. and landed in Inverness-shire with seven
  12. companions. On 19 Aug he raised his father's
  13. standard, and within a week had rallied an
  14. army of 2,000 Highlanders. He entered
  15. Edinburgh almost without resistance, won an
  16. easy victory at Prestonpans, invaded England,
  17. and by 4 Dec had reached Derby, where his
  18. officers insisted on a retreat. The army
  19. returned to Scotland and won a victory at
  20. Falkirk, but was forced to retire to the
  21. Highlands before Cumberland's advance. On 16
  22. Apr at Culloden Charles's army was routed by
  23. Cumberland, and he fled. For five months he
  24. wandered through the Highlands with a price
  25. of 30,000 on his head before escaping to
  26. France. He visited England secretly in 1750,
  27. and may have made other visits. In later life
  28. he degenerated into a friendless drunkard. He
  29. settled in Italy 1766. With a price of 0,000
  30. on his hed, Charles Edward fled to France,
  31. eventually settling in Italy 1766.
